Sections, phrases, notes and lyrics
The chart reads top to bottom in the order the song is played. Each row is a section, or a phrase inside a section, with its own groove.
Naming sections
Pick a name from the menu on the row: Intro, Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, Post-Chorus, Interlude, Bridge, Breakdown, Solo, Instrumental, Build, Drop or Outro. Custom… lets you type any name, such as "Tag" or "Vamp". When a name appears more than once, the rows are numbered for you: Verse 1, Verse 2, Verse 3. The color stripe beside the name follows the section type, so all your choruses match.
Repeat and measures
Repeat is how many times the grid plays. The number of measures the section lasts is shown under it: bars in the grid times the repeat count. A two-bar groove repeated four times is eight measures. The total for the song is shown under the chart.
Copying a section you've already written
Pick a name the song already uses on a blank row, and that row fills in from the nearest section with the same name: time signature, repeat, notes, grid and phrases. A row that already has hits or notes is never overwritten.
Phrases
Real sections change inside themselves. An intro might be two bars of nothing, two bars of ride and two bars of groove. Instead of three separate sections, use phrases:
- Press ↳ on the section row. A phrase row appears under it, indented.
- Give the phrase its own grid and repeat count. Add as many as you need.
Phrases print under their section's heading and play in order. Ctrl+Shift+Enter adds a phrase from the keyboard.
Row buttons
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| ↳ | Adds a phrase under this section. |
| ⎘ | Duplicates the row right after itself. On a section, its phrases come along. |
| ↑ ↓ | Moves the row up or down. |
| ✕ | Removes the row. Undo brings it back. |
Ctrl+Enter in any row adds a new section below it.
Notes and lyrics
Under each section's controls are two chips, Notes and Lyrics. Tap one to open its box right there; tap again to close it. A closed chip shows the first few words, so you can see what's in it at a glance.
- Notes is for anything a reader needs: "half-time feel", "build on the toms", "hits with the bass on the and of 4", "watch the singer for the cutoff".
- Lyrics is for a cue so you know where you are. A snippet of the first line is usually enough; the whole line works too.
Both print under the section on the worksheet, lyrics in italics.
